Yak Fiber

What a wonderful gift to mankind.  Yak fiber.

The Yak has several types of valuable fibers.  The outer coarse guard hair is exceptional for braiding into ropes and halters, or weaving into durable rugs, belts, bags, etc..  The soft undercoat is called " down" which the animals grow for superior insulation in the colder months.  It is shed in the spring and can be harvested by combing. (Yaks that are used to combing love it!)  The down is a short fiber, with good crimp but little oil.  It doesn't have the lanolin that makes sheep wool greasy, so you don't lose much weight when it's washed.  It has a diameter of 14-18 microns.  It is similar to cashmere, camel or qiviut.

For maximum softness raw yak fiber must be de-haired to remove the guard hair.  Special machines make this possible.  Because yak have several intermediate lengths of guard hair the machines used for the de-hairing process of cashmere do not work well. Even when properly done you'll find some of the very fine yak down remaining with the hair.  One should request everything that is removed to be returned. This felts readily for a very warm, wooly, and water-resistant product such as exotic boot liners.

The longest and coarsest hairs come from the Yak's skirt and tail.  These are superior in strength.
